The Romans 12 Team—ResLife Edition
At this point in the semester TFC students have had plenty of time to meet their resident assistant (RA) and resident director (RD); however, not everyone has had the opportunity to hear each RD's heart behind why they are so invested in this small college campus nestled in Northeast Georgia. The purpose of this article is to formally introduce the campus of TFC to the RDs.
When interviewed, Thomas Floyd, RD of the Terrace community, was quick to respond with his vision for this year, “Break down the walls.” When asked to explain further he began to speak on his experiences as a college student. He exclaimed, “The music majors would sit on one side of the cafeteria, and the sports management majors would sit on the other side.” He then began to explain why that bothered him and the steps he took to try to bridge the gaps he saw. When asked about his job as an RD for TFC, he called himself a friend, counselor, landlord, skill developer, and leader.
Katie Thorne, RD for Fant/Letourneau halls, was very passionate about the opportunity to respond to the questions asked about her team. She began to explain that the job of the ResLife team, in her opinion, is “Fostering spiritual growth through community living.” During her interview, Katie began to break down the role of an RA as best as possible. She stated, “The job of an RA is very demanding, it does come with a very, very small scholarship, but it is not nearly enough to compensate for a number of hours they put in. RA’s do their job because they love what they do, not because of the money.”
Saylo, the RD of Forest Hall was adamant about making sure that the student body knows that the RA’s on their halls are not the bad guys, but rather, RAs want to love on students in a way that still enforces the rules of the campus and helps students grow spiritually. He reported that his team was very passionate about their motto “FOR THE KING!” He explained this motto by saying that everything his team does is for the King; it is very important to them that they do not become focused on obtaining any glory for themselves.
