TFC Theatrical Society Presents Shakespeare’s The Tempest
Beginning this Friday, the Toccoa Falls College Theatrical Society (TFCTS) will be performing William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. This performance will be filled with magical creatures, plots to murder, romance, and the all-powerful forces of nature. The Theatrical Society has dedicated its semester to bringing the swan song of Shakespeare’s legendary career to life on the stage of Grace Chapel. The society invites all students, faculty, staff, and community members to dedicate a night to enjoy this enchanting production.
The plot begins in the midst of a violent storm on the ship of the king of Naples, which is quickly wrecked on a remote island. Little known to the company of the ship, the island is already inhabited by Prospero, the wrongly usurped Duke of Milan, who the company of the ship banished twelve years prior. In order to keep himself and his young daughter alive, Prospero took to the magic arts and is now in command of all the supernatural creatures on the island. As the men who wronged him roam the island, Prospero enacts his plan for restoration, romance, and revenge.
This semester’s directors, Seniors Abigail Dority and Joshua Bogoniewski, began preparations in anticipation of seeing their vision come to life on the stage. Abigail admits that she is in love with the plot, and tells the Talon:
At first glance The Tempest by William Shakespeare is a fairly straightforward play, but as one continues to look at it deeper, it becomes increasingly more intricate. This is the mark of a great playwright, and Shakespeare definitely hit the nail on the head with this play. Not only does he keep the audience engaged through the given information of the story line and characters, he also leaves just enough information out to allow the audience’s imagination to take hold and run away with it. The Tempest captures the onlookers with the power and magic shown on stage but leaves them in awe of the power and magic happening off stage in the mind.
The cast members have each put their hearts into their characters, and their dedication will be evident as they express themselves on the stage this weekend.
As with any production put on by the TFC Theatrical Society, The Tempest has encountered many obstacles. This semester’s cast has shown incredible resilience and dedication to assure that the show goes on, knowing that, in the end, the effort will produce something worth showing pride in and that the friendships that are built will last forever. “We’re a big family,” says TFCTS member Amber Fincher. “Every semester that we put on a play, we get a new big family.” The cast hopes to make audience members a part of that family as they enjoy the production.
Showtimes are Friday, May 4th, at 7:00 PM, Saturday, May 5th, and 7:00 PM, and Sunday, May 6th, at 3:00 PM at Grace Chapel and Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for students, $7 for adults, and $3 for children, but you can get $1 off of tickets when you purchase them in the Student Center at lunch between April 30th and May 3rd. The show is open to the entire Toccoa community and good for the family. Prepare to batten the hatches. A storm is coming.
