Sadie Hawkins 2018
Ladies, it’s time to find a dance partner, because this Friday night, March 2nd, is the annual SGA Sadie Hawkins dance. This year’s theme is "Back in Time." Students will have the chance to dress up in attire from their favorite modern decade, whether that be the chic 40s or the boho expressions of the 70s. There will be dancing, food, and a great opportunity to make new friends.
The Talon sat down with Kelsey Edmonds, Campus Life Chair of Executives, to get a behind-the-scenes look at this year’s Sadie Hawkins dance. Kelsey, a sophomore, this being her second semester as a Chair, was excited to talk about how she planned to put her own unique spin on the event. She was involved with the committee that put the Sadie Hawkins dance together last spring, and she is well-prepared to take the reins this year. “People have the option to dress up from whatever decade they choose, from the 20s all the way up to the 2000s,” she said. “We’ll have candy corresponding to each of the decades and there will be some interactive things.” The event promises to be a celebration of decades past. “I like planning events that are open to let people have freedom in what they are doing. I want them to have their own experience of it. So, having it open to many decades gives people the freedom to express themselves in whatever way they choose. I like it that way.”
Katherine Clair, a sophomore and committee member, commented on her take of the upcoming event. “The theme is a combination of different ones. It’s a conglomeration of a couple of decades, not just one decade. It’s new, with a different sort of spice, flavor, and variety.” Katherine was eager to be planning alongside the rest of her team in order to make the event a success.
The Talon asked Kelsey if she had any personal connections or good memories of previous Sadie Hawkins that she’d like to share, to which she simply blushed and laughed. “That’s kind of personal. Last year’s dance was on my birthday. I had a lot fun, but I danced so much that I injured my back. I had a little too much fun.” She laughed. She mentioned that one of her favorite parts about Sadie Hawkins is getting to see the fun, creative ways that girls ask their dates. “I’m looking forward to seeing how those play out.” Katherine and Kelsey spoke about how nerve-racking it can be for girls to ask guys to the dance, and how many girls were slowly getting on board with the idea. For girls that were on the fence, or nervous, Kelsey gave a great piece of advice. “In the wise words of Shia LaBeouf, ‘just do it!’”
Kelsey Edmonds did not work alone planning and organizing Friday’s dance. She had the support of her committee. ‘I want to thank Jamie Daniels, Travis Duncan, Emily Bundrick, Hudson Allen, Mandy Silker, Xavier Martin, Katherine Clair, Cameron Booze, and Lilly Butler. I also had a lot of help from fellow executive members. If I’m stuck on something and I need a quick opinion on this-over-that, the people that sit with me in the office help me with that. I also know that they will be there for me the day-of.” Kelsey seemed confident that everything would be ready to go, come the night of the dance.
The Back in Time Sadie Hawkins dance will be Friday, March 2nd, starting at 7 PM in Gate Cottage. Tickets go on sale from Monday, February 26th to Friday, March 2nd in the Student Center. Tickets are $3 a person. Prepare to arrive in your best attire from your favorite decade. The ladies have less than a week to ask the guys to the dance, so put your game face on, and SGA will see everyone Friday night.
