FASHION: Spring 2018
Spring brings change. To the earth, to the general well-being of everyone, and most importantly… to fashion. New York Fashion Week (NYFW) has recently passed, and there were some amazing artifacts released, but from designer to designer there were so many diverse pieces. One common thread throughout all the shows was unconventionality. Fashion has become an increasingly accepting field. What was once a way for everyone to look alike is now a way for complex humans to physically manifested their identities.
Now, there are many new trends circling around the fashion world, and they all are wonderful and unique. While there used to be something called a statement piece (an individual item more bold than the rest), fashion is currently all about statement outfits. Instead of one article being the focal point of an outfit, now every piece of clothing contributes to the overall look, so make each piece count. Chunky, bold shoes don’t have to go with a toned down look. Wear bold shoes, striped pants, a shirt, and accessories. It’s pretty empowering.
The theme of this spring/summer season is: Wear it and wear it well. Here are my top 10 trends of Spring as seen through NYFW, various social media influencers, and the blog, ManRepeller (so, if you’re looking for a ring before spring, choose wisely).
1. Accessorize excessively
2. Mix patterns
3. Wear colors that “don’t look good on you”
4. Don’t think you have to embrace the trendy minimalist style
5. Wear things you aren’t supposed to wear… baggy pants AND a baggy sweater, a little t-shirt that a 10 year old wore in the 90s with a fun skirt
6. Be COMFORTABLE. Don’t sacrifice your bodily sanity to look good. It is beyond overrated, seriously.
7. Dress for yourself. It really is okay to stand out, and it really is okay to not stand out. Wear what you love and feel good in. Regardless of seasons or trends, you deserve to look good and feel good.
8. Pants are very important. 2018 is the year of wearing the pants you want to wear.
9. Thrifting is key. You are a college student, yes? You don’t have a lot of money. Don’t let your closet suffer, it’s not fair. Salvation Army, Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, Buffalo Exchange if you wanna splurge.
10. Challenge yourself, which is a weird concept when it comes to dressing yourself. Buy that plaid suit jacket, buy the pink pants, buy the turtleneck.
I want to leave you with this piece of advice: If you like it, please wear it. Not for me or them, but for you. There is a freedom that comes with being unabashedly expressive through clothes. It may seem silly and a small part of life, but it’s not. It matters. Try it out and let me know how it goes.
