Homecoming 2021
As a time for all the Toccoa Falls College family to gather for a weekend, Homecoming 2022 was a success among the faculty and student body. From the Great Duck Race to the Sweets and Treats event on the intramural field, there was a long-awaited time of reunion after Homecoming 2021 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Deborah Wilkes, Director of Alumni and College Relations, described the weekend as a long trek since years were put into making this year special for specific graduating classes. Wilkes is one of many TFC workers on campus who helped organize the events held throughout the weekend. “It takes many months of planning to make Homecoming a reality," she said. There is a lot of anticipation and planning for alumni attending for the first time. Some of the reunion classes that celebrated this year had been making plans for the last two to three years, and when we knew we would be returning to normal, they were the first people that were notified. There were 45 families who attended Homecoming for the first time since graduating,” Wilkes said.
One of the highlights of Homecoming 2021 was the dedication of the disc golf course. The Savio family, alumni, and donors were present to honor John V. Savio, a graduate of the class of 1977. Homecoming 2021 was also the first normal homecoming for many of the current students. For others, especially the seniors, it was a weekend full of memories that will last a lifetime.
Two seniors in particular, Tim Heath and Kea Miles, had an experience they will never forget. At Homecoming Court during the men’s basketball alumni game, they were crowned Homecoming King and Queen. “I was shocked!” Miles said. “I was already shocked enough to find out that I had gotten on court, and then when Josh called my name, I didn't believe it--it was out of left field!”
One of the weekend's biggest events was the Party Like Your Parents Dance on the intramural field following the game. Walking underneath the tent felt as if you took a step back in time. The students dressed up just like their parents in the '80s/'90s and danced the night away to some of the decades’ most popular songs. It was an evening filled with fun, laughter, and hairspray.
Homecoming Weekend not only reunited the alumni but also brought the TFC community closer together. It provided the opportunity for everyone to come together and create a night they will never forget. “When I reflect on the weekend, what comes to mind is the people, whether that be the alumni, students, faculty, or staff. It is a weekend that brings everyone together and makes people feel like they are a part of something that is very special,” said Tim Heath. Whether you are alumni or currently a student, you will always be a member of the TFC family.
