Sense and Sensibility

Another semester brings another anticipated performance from the TFC Theatrical Society. Personally, these showings are always something I look forward to at the end of every semester. The Theatrical Society has featured wacky and creative adaptations of stories such as The Jungle Book and Robin Hood and are continuing down that path with their creative take on Sense & Sensibility.

Jane Austen's novel, Sense & Sensibility, was published in 1811. Taking place in Victorian-era England, this story is about two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who find themselves in a tight spot as they attempt to find love despite their high status. To make matters worse, their half-brother gains all of their inheritance and leaves them with next-to-nothing.

Alison Lamb, the lead director of the play, has been hoping to direct a play based off one off Austen's work and believes that the cast will make an entertaining spin off of it. Lamb willingly answered a few questions about what viewers should expect.

The main focus of their adaptation of the story is to "showcase the complexity of these beautiful characters in a minimalistic way," said Lamb. It will be a more simplistic rendition that will hopefully keep intact what made the original novel enjoyable, mainly the characters.

Lamb also said:

"I hope to persuade the audience to have a greater appreciation for Jane Austen as well as the time period. For those who are less familiar with this style and era, I hope to convince them that slower living which values propriety does not equate to being boring and unrelatable. This play and the theatrical society as a whole is a testament to God's faithfulness. Our [theatrical] society has hit some low points and even faced the possibility of disbanding; but God has provided over and over, from amazing leadership and talented actors, to committed and generous supporters who give of their time, money, and resources. God is good, and without Him I can tell you first hand that this play wouldn’t be happening. I can’t wait to see what He does in the future."

Showings will take place at Grace Chapel over the upcoming weekend: Friday, November 17th, at 7 pm, Saturday, November 18th, at 7 pm, and the final performance on Sunday, November 19th, at 3 pm. Tickets will be sold at the event for $5 for students ($7 for adults and $3 for children) but will be on sale for a dollar off at the Student Center during meal times Nov. 13-17.

Remember, the Theatrical Society is a group effort from students and organizers so, if you wish to become part of a play, whether by acting or any other position, they will be open to volunteers next semester.
