Lots of Love for "Little Women"
It’s that time in the semester where all the unfinished assignments finally start to sink and crush you in the last moments. All those chapels you missed because you wanted to sleep in a few extra minutes look you in your terrified face from the iAttended screen. The dreaded final paper that seemed so far away is suddenly due tomorrow.
You want a break, and thankfully, the clubs at TFC are ready to provide you with entertainment and events that help you procrastinate just a night longer.
One such club that provided a night of enjoyment for the campus and Toccoa communities was the Theatrical Society. This semester, they brought the classic tale of hardship, romance and family that is Little Women to the TFC stage, or close enough. The event debuted at the Venue at the Star Theatre in downtown Toccoa on April 28 and 29 at 7 PM and May 1 at 3 PM. Anna Grace Tully and Faith Higgins directed the play.
Little Women, originally written by Louisa May Alcott, follows the story of the March sisters during their youth while their father is away fighting for the Union in the American Civil War and their later years, when they finally pursue their destinies. The oldest sister, Meg, falls in love, gets married and has a family. The second sister and major protagonist, Jo, struggles to make it as a writer and deals with a tumultuous relationship with her childhood best friend Laurie. The third sister, Beth, comes out of her shell only to tragically be inflicted with scarlet fever. The youngest, Amy, focuses on art, love, and mercenary things while traveling Europe. It is a touching tale of family, love and achieving your dreams.
The Theatrical Society’s production of the story was a resounding success. The second show on Friday, April 29, was completely sold out. People in the community were actually turned away at the door because of lack of seating! Viewers highly praised the show, even with its long runtime. Considering that the show is a period piece, it was expected to run a bit later than most plays. The three-hour show was worth it for the fun of Laurie and Jo’s dancing, the humor of the school scene and Amy’s tantrum, the emotional reality that was Beth’s tragic story and the sheer chemistry that sparked between Jo and Laurie, played by Nicole Ragsdale and Garrett Goins.
The 2022 Fall semester will bring forth a new play, which is unknown at the moment. It also brings forth a new leadership team within the Society. With several of the long-time officers graduating soon, there has been a passing of the torch to some of the new members.
Caris Schoolcraft passes the presidency over to Faith Higgins. Joshua Trice passes the role of Financial Manager over to Owen Kapella. Victoria Almond passes the role of Public Relations and Archives Manager over to Anna Grace Tully. Katie Zambrowicz hands the role of Costumes Manager over to Nicole Ragsdale. Two managing positions still need to be filled.
